In urban areas, rainfall runoff on increased by impervious soils carries with it mineral and organic matter as well as contaminants accumulated during dry periods. These materials and contaminants are thus transferred to stormwater networks and carried downstream to the sea, thus leading to degradation of water quality and coastal ecosystems. Our project, based on the results of a PhD at the interface of earth, life and social sciences, expands the socio-hydrological research to evaluate the potential retention of renaturated impervious urban urfaces. How much contamination reduction can be expected? It also aims to study the reactions of the public concerned to reduces in urban impervious area and equipment in order to identify the motivations that explain, on the one hand, reluctance, and on the other, acceptance. This interdisciplinary empirical research, centered on the metropolis of Montpellier, is intended to provide hydrological, chemical and sociological data to inform public decision-making, so as to promote nature-based solutions to enhance the quality of runoff and downstream coastal ecosystems.
