Ana Sousa (PhD) is an Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Aveiro and a Principal Investigator at the Institute of Biomedicine (iBiMED) in the same university. She completed her PhD in 2008 at the Faculty of Sciences (University of Lisbon) and did a Postdoc at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science (IGC).
Her work focus on understanding what shapes the microbiota, how it changes over time and on the consequences of these changes to the host. She collaborates with several researchers with complementary expertise, such as a physiotherapist specialist at chronic respiratory diseases at the iBiMED (Alda Marques), an immunologist at the Chronic Diseases Research Centre (Portugal), a quantitative geneticist at IGC and a theoretical physicist at the University of Cologne (Germany). These collaborations strengthen the multidisciplinary approach taken by Ana Sousa in her research. During her career, she has successfully obtained grants from national and international competitive applications (Portuguese Science Foundation and European Research Center). She is a referee of research grant applications for the National Science Foundation (NSF, USA) and of several scientific journals such as Scientific Reports, Applied and Environmental Microbiology and others. Since 2003 she has published 17 papers in international journals. In 2015 she was awarded the PLOS Genetics Research Prize for the best paper of the year. During her research career she has supervised and co-supervised several master and PhD students. In 2017, together with a group of four students, Ana Sousa was the winner of the Angelini University Award.
